Netflix’s “Teach You a Lesson” is gaining huge attention worldwide, but it is also facing sharp criticism over its story and message.

On June 11, critic Wi Geun Woo shared an article about the series on his personal social media. The article had criticized Jin Ki Joo’s acting and described her as a “flaw in the gem” of the show.

Wi Geun Woo pushed back against that view and instead criticized the series itself. He wrote, “The show is not a gem but trash, so how can she be a flaw in it?” His comment quickly drew attention as he appeared to argue that the bigger issue was not Jin Ki Joo’s acting, but the drama itself.

Released on June 5, “Teach You a Lesson” follows the fictional Teachers’ Rights Protection Bureau, an organization created to protect teachers and schools from students, teachers, and parents who cross the line. The series stars Kim Mu Yeol, Lee Sung Min, Jin Ki Joo, and Block B’s P.O.

Despite the criticism, the drama has seen strong results. Soon after its release, “Teach You a Lesson” ranked No. 1 on Netflix’s global Top 10 non English TV show chart.

It also gained more international attention after American actor and former wrestler John Cena posted a photo of Kim Mu Yeol on his personal social media.

However, concerns about the show continue. The original webtoon previously faced controversy over its handling of teacher punishment, racial issues, and feminism related topics.

The racial controversy became especially serious, leading to a long hiatus and the end of the North American service for the webtoon.

Although the Netflix adaptation reportedly adjusted some parts of the original story, some viewers still believe certain scenes may encourage prejudice or reinforce harmful stereotypes. As a result, “Teach You a Lesson” remains both popular and controversial.
