Kim Ji Won is taking on a new kind of dark hero role as a brilliant surgeon in SBS’s upcoming medical noir drama Doctor X: The Age of the White Mafia.
Set to premiere on October 9, Doctor X follows Gye Soo Jung, a gifted surgeon who refuses to accept failure or compromise as she confronts corruption and powerful interests inside the medical world.
Kim Ji Won plays Gye Soo Jung, a highly skilled doctor working at Guseo University Hospital, where conflicts over power and influence have created what the drama describes as a world of “white mafia” figures wearing doctors’ coats.
Rather than relying on traditional action, Gye Soo Jung’s greatest weapon is her surgical ability. The drama will follow her as she challenges powerful people within the hospital while continuing to focus on saving patients.
The series marks SBS’s first attempt at a “medical noir” drama while expanding the network’s familiar dark hero concept into a hospital setting. SBS has previously built dramas around characters fighting corruption and injustice across crime, action, comedy, and fantasy genres.
Doctor X is expected to combine hospital politics, corruption, intense surgical scenes, and a story centered on the meaning of saving lives.
Kim Ji Won’s transformation is also drawing attention as she takes on the role of a genius surgeon after showing different sides of herself through previous projects. She will be joined by Lee Jung Eun as Jang Hee Sook, Son Hyun Joo as Boo Seung Kwon, and Kim Woo Seok as Park Tae Kyung.
The drama is directed by Lee Jung Rim, known for VIP, Revenant, and As You Stood By.
With Kim Ji Won leading the story as a doctor who confronts powerful forces from inside the hospital, Doctor X: The Age of the White Mafia will premiere on SBS on October 9 at 9:50 p.m.
