Netflix’s new series “Teach You a Lesson” is gaining major attention in Korea and overseas, but one scene involving Jin Ki Joo’s character has sparked debate among viewers.
The series was released on June 5 and quickly became a hot topic. “Teach You a Lesson” follows the Teacher Rights Protection Bureau, a group created to protect teachers and schools from students, parents, and even teachers who cross the line.
The drama has been receiving attention as a satisfying revenge style series, especially at a time when many people in Korea are talking about falling teacher authority, juvenile misconduct, and youth crime. Soon after its release, the show ranked No. 1 on Netflix’s “Today’s Top 10 Series in Korea”.
However, some scenes are now receiving criticism. The biggest debate centers on episode 3, where Im Han Rim, played by Jin Ki Joo, introduces herself at a girls’ high school. In the scene, students try to mock her by asking, “Where did you get plastic surgery?” and “Show us your before photo”.
Im Han Rim then responds, “I did get plastic surgery. Breast reduction surgery. But it does not look like anyone in our class really needs reduction”, while looking around the classroom.
The line was adapted from the original webtoon, where a similar exchange also appeared. Because of this, some viewers questioned whether the scene was necessary, while others saw it as part of the character’s bold and sharp personality.
The drama had already faced attention before release due to past controversy around the original webtoon. Some viewers criticized parts of the original story for allegedly encouraging misogynistic ideas, and the webtoon was previously stopped overseas.
Actor Kim Nam Gil was also first offered the lead role but later turned it down, while Kim Mu Yeol eventually joined the project.
Despite the debate, “Teach You a Lesson” is performing strongly. According to FlixPatrol, the series ranked No. 3 on Netflix’s Global TV Shows Top 10 as of June 8 with 674 points.
The drama continues to attract viewers both in Korea and overseas, even as discussions over certain scenes continue.
