MBC’s drama ‘Perfect Crown’ is gaining major attention for its strong buzz and rising ratings, even as criticism from a well-known columnist continues to spread.
A columnist shared their review after watching Episodes 1 and 2, saying, “There isn’t a standout performance or actor that feels worthy,” while noting that one cast member “stands out with her acting transformation” but seemed to be “struggling alone without proper back-and-forth.”
They also addressed viewer reactions, stating, “There are quite a lot of responses saying it is disappointing compared to expectations,” adding that while some viewers pointed to IU and Byeon Woo Seok’s acting, they personally felt “the set and visual quality were more disappointing.”
The criticism continued toward the production style, with comments such as, “I expected the beautiful visuals MBC is known for,” and questioning why “the unique historical drama quality of MBC is not being shown.”
The columnist also raised concerns about directing choices, saying the production “did not make use of MBC’s know-how”.
In particular, the drama was compared to ‘Princess Hours’, with claims that both the royal setting and visual presentation have “stepped backward.”
There were also remarks about the story structure, suggesting it may be “focused more on overseas markets,” pointing out that “there are too few royal characters” and that the drama relies heavily on the two main leads.
The critic added, “If it continues mainly with the two leads arguing, it can become boring,” and said that aside from the main characters, “there are no memorable roles or lines.”
Despite these criticisms, the drama continues to perform strongly. Episode 4 recorded its highest ratings yet with 11.3 percent in the metropolitan area, 11.1 percent nationwide, and 5.3 percent in the key 20–54 demographic.
It ranked No. 1 in its time slot across all categories, with peak ratings reaching 13.8 percent, showing steady upward momentum.
