Lee Dong Wook opened up about why he took on his newest role, sharing that he was worn out from years of doing fantasy dramas.

On July 14, the cast and crew of JTBC’s upcoming Friday drama The Nice Guy held a press conference at The Link Hotel Seoul in Guro District.

Director Song Hae Seong and lead stars Lee Dong Wook, Lee Sung Kyung, Park Hoon, Oh Na Ra, and Ryu Hye Young were present at the event.

The Nice Guy is an emotional noir drama that follows Park Seok Cheol, played by Lee Dong Wook. He’s the oldest grandson of a third-generation gangster family, but surprisingly has a kind and innocent heart. Lee Sung Kyung plays his first love, Kang Mi Young, who dreams of becoming a singer.

Lee Dong Wook’s character, Seok Cheol, once wanted to be a poet but ended up living the life of a gangster to survive.

Talking about why he joined the drama, Lee said, “For the past four to five years, I’ve been mostly doing genre or fantasy series. I started getting tired. It was hard creating new fantasy worlds all the time.”

He continued, “I had to fly around on wires and play characters that don’t exist in real life—like an uncle from another world. I was exhausted by it.”

The actor, known for his iconic roles in fantasy hits like Goblin and Tale of the Nine Tailed, shared that he was craving something more down-to-earth. “Then I read the script for The Nice Guy and thought, ‘This is what I want to do.’ I wanted something realistic, something grounded.”

Lee also revealed he didn’t do anything special to prepare for this role. “I just acted like myself, naturally. You might even see the usual Lee Dong Wook come through. I wanted to play someone you could easily see around you in real life.”

The Nice Guy will premiere with two back-to-back episodes on July 18 at 8:50 p.m. KST.
