Kang Hoon has opened up about wanting to take on more romance projects after stepping into his first romantic comedy lead role in his 12-year acting career.
On September 9, Kang Hoon reflected on tvN’s My Bias, My Boss following the drama’s finale. He played Kang Ha Gi, the head of a fashion platform company, opposite Kim Hye Joon.
Speaking about leading a romantic comedy for the first time, Kang Hoon said, “It was my first rom-com and also my first time presenting a project as the main character, so it feels special. I’m very thankful that so many people enjoyed and loved it.”
The actor admitted that taking responsibility for a leading role came with pressure, but he tried not to let it affect him while filming.
“I thought I should naturally feel some pressure, but I didn’t want to show it on set,” he explained. “I treated it as positive pressure, and I actually felt more comfortable filming than at some other sets.”
Kang Hoon revealed that he had already told his agency that he wanted to try a romantic comedy before receiving the script. Among the projects he reviewed, My Bias, My Boss stood out because he felt it best represented the kind of rom-com he wanted to attempt.
He also explained why romance is currently high on his acting wish list.
“I think right now is when I’m the youngest, and I want to show this period of myself. There’s no genre better than a romantic comedy for showing that,” he said.
Kang Hoon added that being the central character gave him an experience he had been waiting for. In previous projects, he often played characters whose stories developed around another lead, while this drama allowed him to shape his character’s emotional journey from beginning to end.
Despite the positive response, Kang Hoon gave his own performance only 70 out of 100 points.
“I tried to express 100 percent, but after watching through episode 12, I thought it was around 70 points,” he said, explaining that he still saw areas where he could have acted with more ease and made different choices.
Kang Hoon is already continuing in the romance genre with his next tvN project, Secret Love Tales of Soosung Palace (literal title), a historical romance in which he plays Crown Prince Hyang.
He said that although his upcoming drama has a very different historical setting, the emotions behind romance remain familiar.
“Whether it’s the past or the present, I think love is the same,” he shared, adding that he is applying lessons from My Bias, My Boss to his new role.
As for what he wants to do next, Kang Hoon said he remains interested in genre dramas but hopes to focus on romance while he feels it suits this stage of his career.
“I want to do a lot of romance while I’m still at my youngest and best,” he said. “I’m not saying I’m completely confident, but I want to do more romantic comedies and romance projects.”
With his first rom-com lead now completed and another romance already underway, Kang Hoon appears ready to make the genre a bigger part of his acting career.
