Song Kang and Lee Jun Young’s new tvN drama Four Hands, Two Sonatas has made a solid ratings debut, taking first place in its time slot among cable and general programming channels.
According to Nielsen Korea, the first episode of Four Hands, Two Sonatas, which aired on August 29, recorded an average nationwide rating of 3.4% and reached a peak of 4.6%.
In the Seoul metropolitan area, the drama performed slightly higher with an average rating of 3.5% and a peak of 4.7%.
The premiere also ranked No. 1 in its time slot among cable and general programming channels. Among viewers aged 20 to 49, a key demographic for tvN, Four Hands, Two Sonatas also placed first nationwide within the same channel category.
The drama stars Song Kang as Kang Bio and Lee Jun Young as Choi Jung Yo, two talented young pianists whose lives become connected again through music seven years after they competed against each other as children.
The premiere briefly introduced their contrasting situations. Kang Bio has remained deeply focused on becoming a successful pianist and earning recognition from his grandfather, a world-famous conductor. Choi Jung Yo, meanwhile, has stepped away from music because of financial difficulties and responsibilities at home.
Their paths cross again unexpectedly, leading Choi Jung Yo back toward the piano and eventually placing the two former rivals in the same school and class.
Rather than revealing too much of the opening episode, Four Hands, Two Sonatas establishes piano and classical music as the center of Kang Bio and Choi Jung Yo’s developing relationship, while showing how differently the two have experienced music since their childhood competition.
Jang Gyuri also stars as Hong Jae In, a young violist who becomes connected to both characters through music.
With a 3.4% nationwide debut, a 4.6% peak, and a No. 1 finish in its time slot, Four Hands, Two Sonatas has started its run on a promising note as Song Kang and Lee Jun Young’s characters become intertwined once again after seven years.
