Lee Jung Eun and Kim Mu Yeol reunite after four years for Netflix revenge drama 'Halmae'

Lee Jung Eun and Kim Mu Yeol are reuniting for Netflix’s upcoming revenge action series Halmae, four years after working together in Juvenile Justice.

On August 26, Netflix officially confirmed production of the new series and announced a cast led by Lee Jung Eun and Kim Mu Yeol, alongside Heo Joon Ho, Choi Sung Eun, Bae Na Ra, Seo Hyun Woo, and Moon Jong Won.

Halmae is a noir action drama centered on Jung Sook Ja, a woman in her 70s who has lived an ordinary life while raising her grandson and running a restaurant. Her life changes after her grandson becomes the victim of a mysterious attack, leading her to confront a powerful criminal organization known as Cheonghwa Group.

Lee Jung Eun will take on the role of Jung Sook Ja, who picks up a gun again decades after first learning how to use one as a child. The project will mark a new challenge for the actress as she takes on a more action-focused role following appearances in productions including Zombie Daughter, Light Shop, Miss Night and Day, and A Bloody Lucky Day.

Kim Mu Yeol will play Seo Yeon Woo, a mysterious man who approaches Sook Ja and reveals a possible connection between her grandson’s attack and Cheonghwa Group. With strong information-gathering skills and sharp judgment, he helps plan her revenge, although his true intentions remain unclear.

The series is also drawing attention because it brings Lee Jung Eun and Kim Mu Yeol together again after Netflix’s Juvenile Justice. Their reunion is expected to be one of the key points of interest as the two actors take on a very different relationship and darker story this time.

Heo Joon Ho will play Jang Kwang Chul, the chairman of Cheonghwa Group and a former crime boss. Choi Sung Eun, Bae Na Ra, and Seo Hyun Woo will portray senior figures within the organization, while Moon Jong Won will appear as a guesthouse owner with a mysterious past.

Halmae will be directed by Lee Kwon, who previously worked on the action thriller A Shop for Killers. The new Netflix series is expected to combine revenge, crime, mystery, and noir-style action while focusing on the unusual story of an elderly woman fighting back for her family.

Netflix has not yet announced an official release date for Halmae.
