Netflix’s animated hit K-Pop Demon Hunters has been ruled ineligible for the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), raising questions about its chances at the Oscars.

On November 11, Variety reported that while the film is a frontrunner for the U.S. Academy Awards, it will not be eligible at the BAFTAs. Despite Netflix’s official appeal, BAFTA confirmed that the movie did not meet their submission requirements.

BAFTA’s rules state that films must be primarily theatrically released, though exceptions exist for works shown to the British public through events or alternative distribution models.

Netflix had screened K-Pop Demon Hunters in 264 theaters across the U.K. on August 23 and 24, but BAFTA rejected the appeal, noting the film did not meet the minimum requirement of being shown at least 10 times over seven days.

The disqualification has sparked concerns that it could impact the film’s Oscar chances, as no movie has ever won Best Animated Feature at the Oscars without a BAFTA nomination in the same category.

Still, K-Pop Demon Hunters remains a strong Oscar contender, thanks to its record-breaking popularity and box office success.

The film has also received five nominations at the 68th Grammy Awards, happening in Los Angeles on February 1.

Its soundtrack Golden is up for Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Song Written for Visual Media, and Best Remixed Recording (David Guetta remix), while the full OST is nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.
