Netflix has reportedly paid a massive 21.9 billion KRW (around 15 million USD) bonus to Sony Pictures, the production company behind the hit animated movie K-Pop Demon Hunters.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix made the surprise payment as a reward for the film’s huge global success.

The movie, which became the most-watched Netflix film of all time after surpassing 300 million views, brought massive profits to Sony Pictures.

With the new bonus, Sony Pictures’ total profit from the project has now reached about 58.2 billion KRW (40 million USD), on top of the original deal and production budget.

Netflix has also confirmed a sequel for K-Pop Demon Hunters, expected to be released in 2029. Industry sources told Variety, “Since animation takes longer to produce than other genres, both sides likely agreed on this timeline.”

Originally meant for theaters, K-Pop Demon Hunters was sold to Netflix in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The move turned out to be a major success, with the movie capturing global audiences and setting new streaming records.

The film’s soundtrack also became a cultural phenomenon — its main song Golden topped both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the U.K. Official Singles Chart, and went on to earn five Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year.

With Netflix’s biggest-ever animated hit and a highly anticipated sequel on the way, fans are already counting down to 2029.
