Chef Ahn Yoo Sung, famous for his appearance on Netflix’s “Culinary Class Wars”, has shown his compassionate side by helping the grieving families of the Jeju Air tragedy.
On January 1, Chef Ahn visited Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province to serve abalone porridge to the victims' families. Initially planning to prepare rice cake soup for the New Year, Chef Ahn made the thoughtful decision to change the menu to abalone porridge.
Explaining his choice during a radio interview, Chef Ahn said, “Rice cake soup is meaningful for New Year’s Day, but the families are tired and heartbroken. I wanted to serve something easier to eat that could give them a bit of strength, so I prepared abalone porridge. I hope it offers them some comfort during this difficult time.”
The Jeju Air tragedy happened on December 29 when a passenger plane traveling from Bangkok, Thailand, crashed at Muan International Airport. The plane struck an outer wall and caught fire, resulting in 179 fatalities out of 181 passengers, leaving only two survivors.
This isn’t the first time Chef Ahn has stepped up to help. On December 30, just a day after the disaster, he visited the airport with 200 rolls of gimbap for the victims’ families. Reflecting on that moment, he shared, “I was overwhelmed with sadness and couldn’t focus on my work. A producer I had worked with on a show also lost their life in the crash. Cooking and serving others felt like the only way I could deal with the grief.”
Chef Ahn, who runs a restaurant in Seo-gu, Gwangju, worked quickly with his staff to prepare the meals. He promised to return on New Year’s Day, fulfilling that promise with the heartwarming abalone porridge.
Chef Ahn’s actions have drawn praise for his kindness and dedication to supporting the grieving families. Known for his exceptional cooking skills and his inspiring journey as a self-made chef, Chef Ahn became one of South Korea’s 16 Culinary Masters through “Culinary Class Wars”.
Fans and netizens alike are moved by how he uses his culinary talents to bring comfort during tough times.
