BIGBANG member G-Dragon has opened up about the group’s changing team structure and the challenge of creating a fresh sound for their 20th anniversary activities.
On August 22, G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung appeared together on the YouTube program Pinggyego, where they spoke with Yoo Jae Suk and Haha about preparing for BIGBANG’s anniversary comeback.
When asked whether the preparation process had been difficult, G-Dragon explained that the situation is very different from the group’s earlier years.
He said, “In the past, we were all under one company, and since it was our 20th anniversary, we had already been roughly planning things together for about one or two years.”
However, because the members are now represented by different companies, even decisions they make together require additional discussions.
G-Dragon explained, “Even if we finish by saying, ‘Let’s do it this way’ in our group chat, each of us has to discuss it again with our own companies. Once we gather all the feedback, making a decision takes longer than it used to.”
Taeyang agreed, adding that BIGBANG’s continuing connection with YG Entertainment means there are several parties involved in the process.
He said, “There are many places we have to go through, so I think we actually end up talking to each other even more.”
The members then discussed their new song BiiiG, with G-Dragon revealing that listeners should not expect it to sound like a typical BIGBANG track from the past.
He said, “The song being released first doesn’t really have the feeling of our previous BIGBANG songs.”
Taeyang added, “It feels completely new, but our own emotions are still mixed into it.”
G-Dragon also directly mentioned the group’s change from a five-member lineup to the current three-member structure, saying that this created another musical challenge.
He explained, “With the member structure changing from five to three, we also had the task of creating a new sound.”
He then cautiously added, “I’m not sure how much I should say.”
Daesung lightened the mood by pointing out that by the time the episode aired, the song would already be available.
G-Dragon also explained the meaning behind the title BiiiG. He noted that BIGBANG has often used the group’s name in lyrics and said they decided to take the word “BIG” itself and use it in a new way for the song.
Showing confidence in the track, G-Dragon described BiiiG as having “a lot of flavor,” suggesting that BIGBANG’s 20th anniversary music will introduce a different sound while still keeping the group’s identity.
