Actor Byeon Woo Seok is receiving attention for his support of independent cinema after three short films produced through his sponsorship project were officially selected as the opening films of the 52nd Seoul Independent Film Festival.
On November 4, the festival announced that three films completed through the SIFF X Byeon Woo Seok: Shorts on 2025 project will open this year's event and make their world premieres.
The selected films are She Is Always, directed by Park Jung Bin, D.I.D. Imbaal, directed by Heo Ji Yoon, and Nowhere, directed by Lee Joo Yong.
The project was launched in 2025 with Byeon Woo Seok's support to help emerging filmmakers bring their ideas to life.
Rather than simply providing financial assistance, Byeon Woo Seok personally suggested "love" as the theme of the competition and participated in part of the judging process.
The initiative attracted considerable interest, receiving a total of 483 submissions from aspiring filmmakers.
During the festival's press conference, executive director Kim Dong Hyun explained why the three films were selected.
He stated, "We focused on how young creators interpreted the theme of love proposed by Byeon Woo Seok and expressed it through their films."
He added, "We also highly valued the project's purpose of supporting emerging filmmakers, which led us to select these three works as this year's opening films."
Although all three films explore love, each approaches the theme from a different perspective.
She Is Always follows a young couple facing uncertainty involving pregnancy and unemployment, while D.I.D. Imbaal combines fantasy, romance, and science fiction to tell the story of a girl's first love.
Meanwhile, Nowhere explores the relationship of a longtime couple dealing with the challenges of everyday life in the city.
The selection marks a meaningful achievement for Byeon Woo Seok's film support project, as all three completed works will be introduced to audiences through one of South Korea's major independent film festivals.
The festival also highlighted the importance of established actors supporting new filmmakers and helping independent productions reach a wider audience.
The 52nd Seoul Independent Film Festival will take place from November 25 to December 4 at CGV Apgujeong and CGV Cheongdam Cine City in Seoul.
With three supported films now selected to open the festival, Byeon Woo Seok's efforts to encourage independent filmmaking have resulted in a new opportunity for emerging directors to showcase their work.
