GOT7 leader Jay B has shared his thoughts on the renewed popularity of the group's 2014 song Stop Stop It, revealing why he believes the track struggled to gain attention during its original release.
On October 27, Jay B attended a roundtable interview at a café in Hapjeong, Seoul, to celebrate the release of his third single, Chptr. 1.
During the interview, the singer was asked about Stop Stop It, which has recently gained renewed attention on social media as fans and online users participate in a dance challenge featuring the song.
Although the track is enjoying fresh interest 12 years after its release, Jay B had a humorous reaction to its unexpected popularity.
"It would have been nice if it had done well when we were promoting it. It should have been popular back then," he said.
However, the GOT7 leader admitted that he could understand why the song did not receive the same attention at the time.
"But there was a reason it didn't do well back then. The outfits... We wore suspenders, and even the fit was a little..." he recalled with a laugh.
His playful comment about the group's past styling offered a lighthearted explanation for why he believes the song struggled during its original promotion.
Despite his jokes, the renewed interest in Stop Stop It has brought attention back to GOT7's earlier music, introducing the group's older performances to a new audience.
During the interview, Jay B also reflected on GOT7's influence on younger artists, including JYP Entertainment's boy group KickFlip.
He recalled exchanging signed albums with KickFlip members when their promotional activities overlapped around one or two years ago.
"I was curious about what they had written, so I checked their album. They wrote something like, 'Thanks to seniors like you, we're able to promote like this,'" he shared.
Jay B admitted that the message made him feel proud.
"I felt proud. It made me think that there are people who recognize what we've done," he said.
The singer also discussed the possibility of future GOT7 group activities.
He revealed that he will perform alongside members Mark and BamBam at a festival in Thailand this November, although the appearance was not originally planned as a special GOT7 unit performance.
"We didn't plan it separately. The three of us just naturally ended up together," he explained, adding that the other members are currently busy with their individual schedules.
As GOT7's leader, Jay B has previously taken an active role in organizing the group's releases and bringing members together.
However, he admitted that coordinating future activities has become more difficult as everyone's schedules grow busier.
"I can bring up the idea to the members, but I also worry about whether it will realistically be possible," he shared.
Still, Jay B emphasized that the members continue to discuss their next steps.
"We've been talking about it regularly. I think it's about time we slowly started preparing," he said.
He also explained why he remains committed to keeping GOT7 together despite the challenges.
"GOT7 is where I started, so I think that's why I want to protect it. It might not be something as grand as staying true to my original intentions. Maybe it's partly because I can't let go," he reflected.
He continued, "It would be such a waste to completely let go of the team after everything we've been through together. I still believe there's so much more we can do as GOT7."
Meanwhile, Jay B released his third single, Chptr. 1, on October 27 at 6 p.m. KST through major music platforms.
