Actor Yoon Si Yoon opened up about his emotional and funny journey of learning English — and how his mom's tears pushed him to take it seriously.
On the July 24 broadcast of SBS Power FM’s Park Ha Sun’s Cine Town, Yoon Si Yoon and actress Seo Ye Hwa appeared as guests to promote their new play Death Song.
During the show, one listener sent in a message saying, “I heard Si Yoon went to the Philippines last year to study English, and I thought that was really cool.”
Yoon Si Yoon confirmed the story and shared, “While I was on an Asia tour, I spent about two to three months attending an English academy in the Philippines. I also went to Vietnam and Thailand as part of the tour.”
Host Park Ha Sun then asked, “Didn’t your mom tell you, ‘You’re really bad at English,’ while giving you an English book, and that’s what made you decide to study?”
Yoon Si Yoon laughed and replied, “Other parents usually send their kids abroad when they’re young, so they grow up speaking English. But my mom… she started crying and said, ‘Maybe you’re bad at English because of me.’ I really wish she just scolded me instead. I felt so bad.”
He ended the story with a smile, saying, “But English isn’t something you can learn in one day.”
Fans were touched by how real and down-to-earth his story was — and many praised him for working hard to learn a new language even as a busy actor.
