Footballer Hwang Ui Jo (32), who plays for Alanyaspor, has suddenly admitted to charges of illegal filming. In his first trial, the prosecution has asked for a 4-year prison sentence for him.
During the hearing on October 16 at the Seoul Central District Court, Judge Lee Yong Je asked Hwang if he understood that his actions were wrong, to which he replied, “Yes.” Hwang's lawyer had already acknowledged all the charges against him.
The prosecution argued for a harsh sentence, saying, “The video filmed by Hwang likely caused significant pain and shame to the victim. The spread of this video caused serious harm.” Hwang’s manager, who is also his sister-in-law, was found to have distributed the videos and received a 3-year prison sentence last month.

The prosecution noted that Hwang had previously denied the charges and added, “Now that he acknowledges his actions, we question whether he truly reflects on what he did. One of the victims has made it clear that they do not wish to reach an agreement and want a severe punishment.”
In his final statement, Hwang expressed deep remorse. He said, “I sincerely apologize to the victims and everyone who has supported me. I ask for forgiveness from those who cannot forgive me. I will do my best to make up for the harm I caused. I promise to live without making mistakes in the future and to give my all as a football player. I sincerely request leniency.”

Hwang's case took a serious turn when he previously revealed information that could identify one of the victims. The prosecution decided not to pursue charges for this, stating, “It’s difficult to see his announcement as revealing identifiable information about the victim.”
Hwang's first trial was delayed from August 23 to October 16 at his request. He has been accused of filming private videos and recording video calls without the consent of two victims.
Earlier this year, Hwang admitted to filming but denied secretly recording anyone. The person distributing the videos, identified as Ms. Lee, claimed to be his lover and shared the videos on social media. In February, during a trial regarding her charges, the prosecution also sought a 4-year prison sentence for her, but she received a 3-year sentence in June after appealing.
After leaving Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League, Hwang signed a one-year contract with Turkey's Alanyaspor last month. He recently played against Demirspor and scored multiple goals.
Fans are waiting to see how this will affect Hwang's career. He seems sincere in wanting to change and move forward, but only time will tell if he can truly make amends and focus on his football.
