Actor Kim Young Kwang has opened up about his return to romantic comedy in Netflix's Take Charge of My Heart, revealing that working on a brighter story with Chae Soo Bin helped him regain positive energy after playing several dark and intense characters.

In a recent interview, Kim Young Kwang shared that he was happy to return to romance after appearing in thrillers and crime dramas such as Somebody, Trigger, and Evilive.

"Doing a brighter project gave me more energy," he said, explaining that the change in genre was refreshing for him both personally and professionally.

In Take Charge of My Heart, Kim Young Kwang plays Baek Ho Rang, a third-generation wealthy heir who depends on an artificial heart battery. His life becomes connected to Na Bo Bae, played by Chae Soo Bin, a woman with a special electrical ability.

Although the drama features familiar romantic comedy elements, Kim Young Kwang said he was attracted to the sincerity of its story and characters.

"When I read the script, I could immediately picture it. The male and female leads felt like characters from a beautiful romance comic," he explained.

He added that while some parts of the story might seem exaggerated, he could feel the genuine emotions behind them.

The actor also shared that he wanted his romantic scenes with Chae Soo Bin to feel natural rather than deliberately trying to make every interaction romantic.

"If you try too hard to create romantic feelings, they don't always come across. Sometimes unexpected words and actions make those moments more effective," he explained.

For Kim Young Kwang, returning to romance after his 2023 drama Call It Love was initially a little unfamiliar, but the positive atmosphere on set made the experience enjoyable.

He admitted that playing darker characters for several projects had affected his mood and the way he interacted with people.

"While working on darker projects, I found myself becoming quieter and feeling a little down. Playing villains sometimes made me close myself off," he shared.

However, filming Take Charge of My Heart gave him a different experience.

"I laughed a lot while working on this drama. Even when I came home physically tired, the energy stayed positive because I had spent the day laughing," he said.

Kim Young Kwang compared his own experience to his character, who gradually changes after meeting Chae Soo Bin's character.

"Just as Ho Rang changes after meeting Bo Bae, I also started having more fun while acting," he explained.

The actor also enjoyed helping create his character's appearance, revealing that approximately 70% of Ho Rang's costumes were specially made for the production.

He worked closely with the styling team to choose clothing materials and develop outfits that matched the wealthy character's personality.

Looking back on his career, Kim Young Kwang explained that his move into darker roles was a deliberate decision to challenge himself as an actor.

He said Somebody in 2022 became an important turning point because it allowed him to explore a different kind of character after years of romance and comedy projects.

Now approaching his 20th year in the entertainment industry, Kim Young Kwang hopes to continue exploring different genres, including creature-themed productions and roles that require major physical transformations.

For now, however, Take Charge of My Heart holds a special place in his recent career.

After spending years portraying serious and sometimes frightening characters, Kim Young Kwang said returning to a lighthearted romantic comedy reminded him how enjoyable acting could be.

"I needed some brightness in my life too," he shared, describing why the drama became such a positive experience for him.
