Actress Seo Hyun Jin has shared why she hopes viewers will look beyond the serious subject matter of MBC's upcoming drama The Perfect Lie, explaining that its main purpose is to explore lies, truth, and how people decide whom to believe.
On October 28, Seo Hyun Jin attended a press conference for the new Friday-Saturday psychological thriller alongside Yoo Yeon Seok and director Jo Young Min at MBC in Seoul.
The Perfect Lie follows two people who have completely different accounts of the same memory, leading to a tense conflict as they each stand by their version of the truth.
Seo Hyun Jin plays Kang Ji Sun, a woman who insists she is telling the truth, while Yoo Yeon Seok portrays Min Joon Ho, a man who also claims his account is true.
During the event, Seo Hyun Jin addressed concerns that the drama's heavier subject matter could attract more attention than its central message.
"I didn't think the serious subject matter would prevent viewers from focusing on the story. However, we are focusing on 'lies,'" she explained.
The actress emphasized that the series encourages viewers to question how they judge people who lie and what influences their decisions about whom to trust.
"We raise questions from different perspectives, such as how we look at people who lie, what standards we use to judge them, and what we choose to believe. I hope viewers will watch the drama with a focus on lies," she said.
Seo Hyun Jin also made it clear that the sensitive subject matter was not included simply to create drama or attract attention.
"I hope people don't focus only on the heavy subject matter. We didn't use it simply as a plot device, although it does serve as a bridge to help move the story forward," she explained.
She continued, "That was not our main purpose. The main focus is lying itself, and I hope viewers will have plenty to discuss after watching."
Yoo Yeon Seok shared a similar perspective, explaining that filming the drama made him think about how easily people's judgments can be influenced by appearances and public opinion.
"The story made me question what standards we use when deciding whether someone's words are true," he said.
He added that the drama explores how a person's image, reputation, and the opinions of others can shape what people accept as the truth.
The upcoming series also marks Seo Hyun Jin and Yoo Yeon Seok's reunion nearly 10 years after they starred together in the 2016 hit drama Dr. Romantic.
With both actors portraying characters who strongly defend their own version of events, The Perfect Lie aims to encourage viewers to think carefully about truth, trust, and the judgments people make.
The Perfect Lie is scheduled to premiere on October 30 at 9:50 p.m. KST on MBC.
