Director Lee Joon Ik is returning with a new historical film, Firefly, starring Park Hae Il, Park Seo Joon, and Choi Dae Hoon.
On August 21, production companies Migo Works and Kirin Film announced that the main cast has been confirmed and filming is scheduled to begin on September 27.
Firefly is set across two different periods, 1974 and the summer of 1950, shortly after the start of the Korean War. The story follows detective Joon Kyung, who travels to Hwayong after hearing about a case that could help his career, only to become involved in uncovering the truth behind events that happened in the village 24 years earlier.
Park Seo Joon will play Joon Kyung, a detective whose career has been limited by the social restrictions surrounding his family background. Hoping to improve his situation, he follows a lead that takes him to Hwayong and gradually begins to uncover what happened there in 1950.
The project marks Park Seo Joon’s first film in about three years following Concrete Utopia.
Park Hae Il will play Man Seop, a mysterious man who tells Joon Kyung that he can achieve a major career success if he goes to Hwayong. His true identity and reasons for sending the detective there will become an important part of the story.
Choi Dae Hoon will take on the role of Tae Sik, a deputy director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency in 1974 who believes his actions are driven by patriotism.
Director Lee Joon Ik is known for historical films such as The King and the Clown, Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet, Anarchist from Colony, and The Book of Fish. His latest project is expected to once again explore ordinary people living through difficult periods in Korean history.
With Park Seo Joon, Park Hae Il, and Choi Dae Hoon leading the cast, Firefly is set to begin production on September 27.
