Gong Hyo Jin is preparing to show a new side of herself as a working mother and action hero in MBC’s upcoming drama “A Bona Fide Killer.”
The actress recently discussed the project during an interview for Cosmopolitan’s August issue. The series marks her first MBC drama in 15 years.
Gong Hyo Jin plays Yoo Bo Na, an ordinary working mother who secretly lives as a legendary killer.
She revealed that she first received the script around three years ago and was drawn to its simple storytelling and open atmosphere.
“Although it is based on a webtoon, the story left room for viewers to use their imagination,” she said.
However, Gong Hyo Jin admitted that she initially had doubts about accepting the role because of the drama’s action scenes.
“At first, I was not confident,” she explained. “I did not think I was an actress who could perform action well.”
The director later told her that Yoo Bo Na would mainly use firearms rather than martial arts. Gong Hyo Jin said the explanation gave her the courage to take on the challenge.
According to the actress, one of the drama’s main attractions is the contrast between Yoo Bo Na’s dangerous missions and her ordinary home life.
“After completing a mission, she returns to her child, her life as a daughter in law, and her loving husband,” Gong Hyo Jin said.
She added that while the drama includes fantasy elements, its story may connect with working mothers who balance their jobs, families, and household responsibilities.
Known for romantic comedies such as “Pasta,” “The Greatest Love,” “The Master’s Sun,” and “When the Camellia Blooms,” Gong Hyo Jin said playing a mother is not completely new to her.
“I have played mothers for a long time,” she said, mentioning her roles in “When the Camellia Blooms” and “Thank You.”
Gong Hyo Jin explained that the biggest change is not the character’s role as a mother, but the type of relationship shown in the story.
“In the past, many dramas followed people meeting and falling in love,” she said. “This drama focuses on a husband and wife who have already confirmed their love for each other.”
The actress also shared that she currently feels more peaceful and secure in her personal life.
“Right now, I am living the most comfortable and dependable days of my life,” Gong Hyo Jin said. “Everything feels okay, and that makes me happy.”
