IU became emotional as she personally addressed the criticism surrounding her MBC drama “Perfect Crown”.

On May 16, IU celebrated her birthday by renting out a theater at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul and meeting her fans, UAENA. During the event, she held a screening of “Perfect Crown”, where she played Seong Hee Joo.

After the screening, IU opened up about the drama and admitted that she had been thinking a lot recently. She shared, “I think I need to do better. I need to do well with more responsibility”.

IU then addressed the criticism about her performance in the drama. She said, “If I disappointed you or showed a lacking side of myself, that is really all my fault”.

When fans tried to comfort her by saying it was not true, IU firmly replied, “It really is true. I will take responsibility and do well. I also have to become someone our UAENA can be proud of”.

IU also promised to work harder as someone who receives love from many people. She said, “This all would have been fine if I had just done better. As someone who receives your love, I will do better”.

She continued by saying that she accepts what fans say to her and wants to grow from it. IU shared, “If there is something I lack, please keep telling me more, scold me more, and push me more. Then I will listen to those words and work hard to become a better person”.

IU eventually cried while thanking her fans for continuing to support her. She said, “I love you. I want to show you a better side, but I am sorry that I keep having lacking parts. Still, thank you for continuing to give me chances and for looking at me with affection”.

She then bowed deeply and added, “I will really work harder and do better.”

“Perfect Crown” was one of MBC’s most anticipated dramas of the year, but it faced criticism during its run. Early on, some viewers questioned the acting of the lead actors IU and Byeon Woo Seok. Near the end, the drama also faced a historical controversy.

The issue grew after episode 11, where viewers pointed out problems in the enthronement scene. Some criticized the use of “cheonsae” instead of “manse,” saying it could affect the meaning of Korea’s independent status. Others also questioned the use of certain royal clothing and a Chinese style tea ceremony scene.

The production team later apologized, saying, “We sincerely bow our heads and apologize for causing concern” over the drama’s world building and historical accuracy.

They also admitted, “We lacked the effort to carefully refine and closely check the world building,” and said they would revise the audio and subtitles in future reruns, VOD, and OTT versions.

Despite the controversies, “Perfect Crown” ended with its highest rating of 13.8%.
