BTS received a major welcome in Mexico after meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum during their official visit to the country.
On May 6 local time, the group visited the presidential office in Mexico City, where they had a conversation with President Sheinbaum for about 40 minutes. The meeting took place after BTS was officially invited by the president.
President Sheinbaum welcomed the group and described them as “a group that Mexican citizens have been waiting for for a long time.”
The Mexican government also treated BTS as honored visitors and presented them with a commemorative plaque.
The plaque recognized the group for inspiring young people through music and for sharing messages of respect, empathy, diversity, and peace.
The biggest moment came when all seven BTS members appeared on the balcony of the presidential office with President Sheinbaum. Around 50,000 people gathered at Zocalo Square and loudly cheered for the group.
BTS greeted the crowd in Spanish and said, “We missed Mexico,” adding, “The energy is truly amazing. Thank you for supporting us.”
President Sheinbaum later shared her thoughts on social media, saying she was happy to welcome “the group most loved by young people in Mexico.” She also said BTS’s music and message help connect Mexico and Korea.
Local media gave strong attention to the visit, especially the group’s meeting with the president and the huge crowd at Zocalo Square.
BTS is also set to hold three sold-out concerts at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City on May 7, May 9, and May 10.
The group continues to show its strong global popularity, with their album “ARIRANG” and title track “SWIM” also reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s main album and singles charts.
