Designer Lee Jung Woo, who is known as Jun Ji Hyun’s mother in law, is drawing attention after personally speaking out to explain a BTS related controversy that recently sparked debate online.

On March 23, Lee Jung Woo shared a long statement on her personal account after some people criticized part of her earlier post about BTS.

She strongly denied that she ever intended to attack the group and made it clear that she has been a loyal fan for years.

Lee Jung Woo directly addressed the backlash by saying, “In this country, can’t a celebrity’s family even freely be a fan?” She also stressed that she is no longer a public figure, adding, “I am an ordinary person who retired a long time ago.”

She then made her feelings even clearer by saying, Would a 10 year ARMY post something criticizing the people she supports?” and added, “Especially to my team, who made a great comeback after 3 years and 9 months with a great album.”

According to Lee Jung Woo, the phrase that caused controversy was not meant as criticism at all. She explained that it was based on something the BTS members themselves had already jokingly said during a Weverse Live.

She said, “The members talked about it so cheerfully on Weverse Live and moved on, so I also laughed a lot and thought it was funny.”

She also clarified that she had no intention of mocking anyone’s language ability, saying, “I am not someone who is good at English, and I’m even less someone who would talk about someone else’s English skills.”

The controversy grew even more surprising because Lee Jung Woo’s original post was actually full of praise for BTS’s comeback.

She called their return with ARIRANG and the Gwanghwamun live performance “historic,” and praised the album by saying, “The 14 released tracks shine with perfect curation.”

She also praised the music itself, writing that “the beats are unbelievably good and that the lyrics felt “layered, philosophical, and poetic.”

Because her post was mostly filled with strong support for the group, many were surprised that one line led to controversy.

In the end, Lee Jung Woo personally stepped in to explain the full context, making it clear that she remains a dedicated BTS fan and never meant to insult the members.
