BIGBANG member G-Dragon is reportedly in line to receive a cultural merit award, following BTS’s historic win in 2018.
On October 15, MyDaily reported that G-Dragon would be honored at the 16th Korea Pop Culture and Arts Awards, set to take place on October 23 at the National Theater of Korea, Haeoreum Theater in Seoul.
However, a representative from the Korea Creative Content Agency, which organizes the awards, told Newsen, “At this time, it is difficult to confirm.”
The Korea Pop Culture and Arts Awards, launched in 2010, is a government program that recognizes individuals and professionals who have made significant contributions to Korean pop culture and arts. To qualify for a cultural merit award, a person must have at least 15 years of achievement in their field.
Past recipients include legendary artists such as Lee Mi Ja, who received the Gold Crown Cultural Merit, and Cho Yong Pil, Nam Jin, Ha Chun Hwa, and Tae Jin Ah, who received the Silver Crown.
Shin Joong Hyun received the Bronze Crown, and Lee Moon Sae received the Ok Crown Cultural Merit. BTS made history as the first idol group to receive the Flower Crown Cultural Merit in 2018.
G-Dragon, who debuted with BIGBANG in 2006, has previously been recognized with the Prime Minister’s Commendation in 2016, marking his long-standing influence in the Korean music industry.
