Veteran actress Kim Young Ok, often called the “nation’s grandmother,” has shared a painful story about a remark she once received from a fellow actor.
On the August 16 episode of MBN’s Healing Talk Show Dongchimi, the topic of the day was “That mouth is the problem.”
Kim Young Ok revealed, “A fellow actor once told me, ‘Unnie, you’ve done better than your ability.’ It was said like a joke, but because it came from someone of my generation, it struck a nerve."
She added, "That person was a close friend. I want to be clear — it wasn’t Na Moon Hee, so please don’t misunderstand.”

She explained that what the person meant was, “‘Compared to your skills, you’ve been loved by more viewers than I could ever be.’”
At first, she was stunned and asked them to repeat it, and they said the same thing again. Kim Young Ok reflected, “I think they probably felt bitter about something. I can understand it, but at my age now, I don’t want to force myself to keep meeting people like that just because we’re close. Words need to be careful. No matter how close you are, if words go too far, they can hurt.”
Her candid story resonated with viewers and fellow guests, as Kim Tae Hoon and Geum Bo Ra also shared their own experiences of being hurt by careless words.
Still active at 87, Kim Young Ok’s honesty reminded everyone that even respected veterans who have spent decades on screen are not immune to the sting of careless remarks.
