SHINee’s Taemin has publicly apologized after making a comment about an earthquake during his time in Japan, saying he’ll be more careful with his words from now on.
On July 6, Taemin shared an apology on his Instagram Story following concerns from fans and netizens. He wrote, “I’m sorry for casually talking about the earthquake while trying to comfort fans who were worried. I’ll be more thoughtful with my words and actions moving forward.”
The issue started during a live broadcast on July 5. Taemin and fellow SHINee member Minho went live while riding in a car in Japan. They were there for the Show! Music Core in JAPAN event held at the Belluna Dome, with Minho as the MC and Taemin as a performer.
During the broadcast, Taemin mentioned a viral earthquake prediction and said, “It’s raining a lot right now. But about that prediction, we’re still safe, so please don’t worry too much”.
He was referring to a prophecy made by Japanese manga artist Tatsuki Ryo in his 1999 book The Future I Saw, which has gone viral for predicting the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The book warned of a big disaster happening on July 5, 2025—raising fears especially as Japan has recently experienced frequent earthquakes.
Trying to lighten the mood, Taemin added, “I was worried—what if things start shaking while I’m singing? I imagined it. If the stage shakes, it could actually look cool. Like 3D, with fireworks going off and fire effects—I pictured it all.”
He also made it clear that it was just his imagination, saying, “Of course, I hope nothing happens. I thought that by saying it out loud, maybe it wouldn’t come true.”
However, some people criticized Taemin for making light of a serious natural disaster, especially considering the fear and trauma earthquakes can cause.
In response, Taemin quickly apologized, saying, “I regret that I spoke lightly without fully thinking about the feelings of people in Japan or the seriousness of natural disasters. I was worried too, and I’m thankful that there wasn’t any major damage. I’ll be more careful and considerate in the future.”
Fans appreciated his quick response and honesty, while others are still urging idols to be extra sensitive when talking about serious topics, especially in countries they’re visiting.
