TVING's upcoming crime thriller The Substitute has released its first stills featuring Bae Hyun Sung, Cha Kang Yoon, and Park Yoon Ho, giving viewers a closer look at their characters ahead of the drama's November 23 premiere.
Released on October 30, the new photos introduce three high school students whose seemingly ordinary friendship becomes complicated by secrets, personal struggles, and a dangerous agreement.
Bae Hyun Sung plays Nam Jae Yeop, a student who appears to have everything but hides secrets behind his perfect image. Cha Kang Yoon portrays Kang Geon Tae, a hardworking scholarship student determined to secure his future, while Park Yoon Ho takes on the role of Joo Hee Dong, Geon Tae's close friend whose relationship with the others faces unexpected challenges.
In the newly released stills, the three actors initially appear as ordinary students enjoying basketball together. However, another set of photos shows their serious expressions, suggesting that something has changed between them.
The contrasting images raise questions about what each character is hiding and how their friendship will be affected by a decision that could change their lives.
Speaking about their on-screen chemistry, Bae Hyun Sung shared, "Even during the script reading, each character's personality was already clear. Cha Kang Yoon portrayed Geon Tae's honest and strong personality well, while Park Yoon Ho's emotional expressions as Hee Dong were impressive."
He added that working with actors who brought different qualities to their roles made filming enjoyable.
Cha Kang Yoon also praised his co-stars, explaining that Bae Hyun Sung helped him understand his character's emotional state, while Park Yoon Ho was so similar to his role that he often called him Hee Dong even outside their scenes.
Meanwhile, Park Yoon Ho described Bae Hyun Sung as a dependable senior on set and said he enjoyed working with Cha Kang Yoon, who is the same age as him.
The production team also expressed confidence in the three actors, stating, "The chemistry between Bae Hyun Sung, Cha Kang Yoon, and Park Yoon Ho is impressive. Their intense acting performances will be another highlight of the drama."
The Substitute follows three students whose different desires and personal struggles collide during South Korea's important college entrance examination, leading them into a dangerous situation involving betrayal and psychological battles.
Directed by Park So Yeon and written by Choi Su, the series promises to explore how pressure, ambition, and hidden secrets can change relationships.
The Substitute is scheduled to premiere exclusively on TVING on November 23, 2026.
