Actor Ahn Hyo Seop has revealed the intense preparation behind his role as a genius chef in JTBC's Final Table, including a serious finger injury and months of practice that helped him perform cooking scenes without relying on a professional chef double.
The drama has already made a strong start, reaching No. 1 on Disney+ Korea's Top 10 Series chart during its first week of broadcast.
In Final Table, Ahn Hyo Seop plays Kang Han, a talented chef who takes on new challenges in the competitive culinary world.
To make his character believable, the actor spent considerable time practicing professional cooking techniques, including knife skills, wok handling, and food plating.
His dedication was so impressive that director Kim Do Hoon revealed the production team barely needed the professional chef double they had prepared.
"We had a double ready, but we didn't need one. Ahn Hyo Seop was actually better, so we even used his footage instead of the scenes filmed by the professional chef double," the director praised during the drama's press conference.
However, achieving those realistic cooking scenes was not easy.
While practicing his knife skills, Ahn Hyo Seop accidentally suffered a serious cut to his finger. Despite the injury, he continued preparing for the role as he recovered, gradually working on his hand movements and becoming more comfortable with kitchen tools.
The experience also helped him better understand Kang Han's determination and emotional struggles.
During the press conference, Ahn Hyo Seop explained why he put so much effort into learning the skills of a professional chef.
"Because I was playing a professional, there couldn't be any obvious flaws. I prepared and practiced so much that I even felt bad about wasting vegetables," he shared.
The actor also studied how real chefs behave in the kitchen, paying attention to their confidence, calm attitude, and movements.
"I tried to study the attitude and composure of actual chefs. I worked hard to figure out how to make Kang Han look professional and real," he explained.
Beyond mastering cooking techniques, Ahn Hyo Seop wanted to understand the meaning behind his character's passion for food.
"Kang Han puts a lot of meaning into his cooking. There is sincerity in everything he makes," he said.
His preparation has become one of the highlights surrounding Final Table, with the production team praising his efforts to bring authenticity to the cooking scenes.
Meanwhile, Final Table continues its Saturday-Sunday broadcast on JTBC, with the next episode scheduled for October 31 at 10:40 PM KST. The drama is also available through Disney+ in South Korea.
