IU is moving forward with legal action to identify an anonymous social media user accused of repeatedly spreading false information about her.
On July 20, EDAM Entertainment confirmed that IU’s legal team had filed a discovery request with a United States court to obtain information that could reveal the identity of the account owner.
IU’s representatives reportedly submitted the request against Meta to the US District Court for the Northern District of California on July 15. Meta operates Threads, where the posts were allegedly published.
The user, referred to as “A,” is accused of writing 52 posts about IU between March and October of last year. Because the account owner’s identity remains unknown, IU’s side has reportedly faced difficulty continuing its civil case in South Korea.
Through the US court request, her legal team is asking Meta to provide available account details, which may include the user’s name, address, phone number, email address, and login IP information.
The disputed posts reportedly included plagiarism allegations, false claims about IU’s nationality, and statements about the international performance of her drama “When Life Gives You Tangerines.”
Other posts allegedly accused IU of using the deaths of Sulli, Goo Hara, and Jonghyun for publicity. The filing also reportedly mentioned claims involving media control, public opinion manipulation, and attempts to connect her lyrics to a national tragedy.
EDAM Entertainment previously announced in February that it had filed a civil damages lawsuit against a Threads user.
The agency stated, “We filed a civil damages lawsuit against a user who spread false information and made harmful statements about the artist on the overseas platform Threads.”
It added, “To identify the user, we are proceeding with a request for information through a US court.”
The latest filing is intended to identify the person behind the account so IU’s legal team can continue its case in South Korea.
