Jin Ki Joo opened up about the mixed reactions to her performance as Im Han Rim in the Netflix series “Teach You a Lesson”.
In the drama, Jin Ki Joo plays Im Han Rim, a former special forces member who now works as an inspector for the Teachers’ Rights Protection Bureau.
Her character is known for acting before speaking when she sees injustice, and her unpredictable style made her stand out to viewers.
However, some viewers had mixed opinions about Im Han Rim’s strong voice and exaggerated acting style. During an interview, Jin Ki Joo explained that she worked hard to understand a job she had never experienced before.
She said, “Because I had to become someone with a job I had never experienced, I watched many videos with the desire to absorb it into every part of myself”.
Jin Ki Joo shared that she watched many documentaries and training videos of special forces soldiers. She admitted that when she first heard their voice and tone, she also felt it was unfamiliar.
She explained, “If you do not know much about this type of job, you might think, ‘How can they make that kind of sound?’”
After watching their intense training repeatedly, Jin Ki Joo said her view changed. She shared that she came to understand the voice as something connected to a soldier’s mindset and responsibility to become stronger.
She added, “Later, I felt respect for it. I thought it was an amazing sound, and I believed it carried the will to go beyond human limits”.
Jin Ki Joo also said she believed Im Han Rim may have wanted to pass on what she learned through hardship to students and younger people.
“Teach You a Lesson” was released on Netflix on June 5.
