Lee Hyo Je shared a chilling behind the scenes story from filming Netflix’s young adult horror series “If Wishes Could Kill.”
In the series, which was released on April 24, Lee Hyo Je plays Hyung Wook, a playful high school student who becomes the first person connected to the mysterious wish granting app. The story follows students who try to escape a curse after suddenly being warned of their deaths.
“If Wishes Could Kill” received strong global attention after its release and climbed to No. 4 on Netflix’s global Top 10 non English shows.
Lee Hyo Je said he was first surprised by the genre. During the audition, he only saw part of the script and thought, “I thought it was something like a mafia game”.
However, he later became deeply interested in the young adult horror story. To prepare for Hyung Wook’s playful and otaku like side, he played games and watched animations.
He also talked about the intense possession scene that scared many viewers. Lee Hyo Je explained, “When I was being possessed, I thought my inner self was being split into two”.
He said he wanted to show both the evil force controlling his body and Hyung Wook fighting back, saying, “Do not play with me”.
Because he was so immersed in the role, Lee Hyo Je said he had strange experiences while filming. He had dreams where he could not remember his lines even after memorizing the script, and he also experienced sleep paralysis for the first time.
The most memorable story happened while filming at an abandoned school. Lee Hyo Je said, “The scariest moment was when we were filming at an abandoned school”.
He explained that the new building had no electricity and the doors were locked, but while he was looking at it alone from the playground, “a bright light turned on,” the curtains suddenly moved, and the light went off.
He added that he froze and could not speak at that moment. Looking back at the show’s success, he jokingly said, “Ah, what I saw back then really was a ghost. Maybe that is why it became a hit.”
