NewJeans' song "ETA" is making waves again, even though it was released over a year ago. The track, which features members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein, has seen a huge increase in Spotify streams for four days straight.
As of October 3, "ETA," a title track from NewJeans' second EP Get Up, reached an impressive 738,650 streams in just one day. This is more than double the 320,000 streams it had on September 29.
This sudden rise in streams is quite surprising. Normally, songs experience a steady decline in streams over time, but "ETA" is defying that trend.
During September, it had daily streams between 300,000 and 350,000. Then it jumped to 420,000 on September 30, followed by 560,000 on October 1, 660,000 on October 2, and finally around 730,000 on October 3.
The boost in popularity can be linked to attention from global digital creators, especially YouTubers. One notable moment was when American streamer Jason celebrated reaching 100,000 subscribers on Twitch with a live stream on September 30.
He played "ETA" several times as background music while dancing with friends, which fans later edited into clips on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). This helped revive the "ETA" dance challenge on TikTok, leading to a big spike in searches for "NewJeans ETA" on Google Trends, with interest soaring globally, including in the U.S., Canada, Asia, Europe, South America, and Oceania.
Thanks to this surge, "ETA" climbed to number one in the K-pop genre on Apple Music in the U.S. This achievement stands out, especially since the songs in second and third place are new releases. "ETA" is also holding strong on major domestic music charts like Melon.
"ETA" is an upbeat track with a strong beat and elements of Favela Funk. Upon its release in July last year, it quickly topped major domestic charts alongside "Super Shy." It even entered the Spotify Global "Daily Top Songs" chart at number 25 on its release day and made it onto the Billboard Hot 100, highlighting its global success.
The music video for "ETA," filmed on a mobile phone, has been praised for challenging K-pop norms and has won awards at international advertising festivals, including the One Show 2024 and Spikes Asia 2024.
