BTOB's Yook Sungjae has revealed an unexpected story behind his casting in "Who Are You: School 2015", sharing that he nearly gave up on acting after a director allegedly made insulting remarks about his idol group during an audition.
On the November 5 broadcast of SBS's variety show *Master Jang Hang Jun*, Yook Sungjae appeared alongside actress Park Min Young and recalled one of the most memorable auditions of his career.
The singer and actor explained that he had little acting experience at the time and was too busy with BTOB's activities to properly prepare for the opportunity.
*"It was a project that many rookie actors wanted to be part of, but I went without even knowing what it was. I was so busy as an idol that I didn't know whether it was a drama, variety show, or movie,"* he recalled.
He added that he was desperate to succeed because he wanted to help BTOB gain more recognition.
However, the audition reportedly took an uncomfortable turn when the director began questioning his background as an idol.
According to Yook Sungjae, after he introduced himself as a BTOB member, the director responded with dismissive comments.
*"BTOB? What's that? They're completely unknown? Do you think doing something like that will get you anywhere?"* Yook Sungjae recalled the director saying.
The remarks reportedly upset him, especially because he was working hard to establish himself in the entertainment industry.
Eventually, he decided to speak up.
*"I got so angry that my face and ears turned completely red. I told him, 'Director, I don't think it's right to speak that way to someone who is working this hard,'"* he shared.
Yook Sungjae then walked out of the audition, believing that he had ruined his chance of getting the role.
*"As I left, I thought, 'I guess I can't make it in this industry.' He was a very capable director, so I decided I should just focus on working hard as an idol,"* he admitted.
However, what happened next surprised him.
Yook Sungjae explained that the director had actually been testing his emotional reaction because the character he was auditioning for had difficulty controlling his anger.
*"The role I was given in School 2015 was a student with anger management problems. The director was testing me,"* he revealed.
According to the actor, his genuine frustration and visibly red face ended up making an impression on the director.
*"He liked that my face turned red,"* Yook Sungjae explained.
After another audition, he was eventually cast as Gong Tae Kwang in *Who Are You: School 2015*.
Looking back, Yook Sungjae described the unexpected outcome as an incredible stroke of luck.
*"It was pure luck,"* he said.
His story surprised viewers with the unusual circumstances surrounding one of his early acting opportunities.
What Yook Sungjae initially believed was a failed audition ultimately became an important moment in his acting career, showing how his genuine emotional reaction unexpectedly helped him secure the role.
