Actor Lee Jin Wook has officially joined Girls' Generation's YoonA in the upcoming Korean remake of the popular Japanese drama Unnatural, raising excitement for the new mystery series.
The upcoming tvN drama, tentatively titled Unnatural, is scheduled to premiere in 2027. It follows forensic pathologists working at U.D.I., a fictional autopsy and investigation center affiliated with the National Forensic Service, as they uncover the truth behind mysterious deaths.
YoonA was previously confirmed to play Song Do Eun, one of the drama's leading forensic pathologists. Now, Lee Jin Wook has officially been cast as Goo Seung Hyuk, another forensic pathologist working alongside her at U.D.I.
Lee Jin Wook's character is described as a highly skilled but emotionally distant forensic expert who rarely shows his feelings. Unlike most people, Goo Seung Hyuk appears more interested in the dead than the living, earning him the nickname "Jeoseung Hyuk" among his colleagues, a Korean wordplay referencing the afterlife.
Despite his cold personality, he is known for his exceptional abilities, having performed approximately 3,000 autopsies. He can complete examinations quickly while carefully identifying even the smallest clues left behind.
The role will give Lee Jin Wook another opportunity to portray a character who investigates the truth, but this time from a different perspective. After previously playing detectives and lawyers, he will take on the role of a forensic pathologist who examines evidence left by the deceased.
The production team also expressed confidence in his casting, saying, "Lee Jin Wook's distinctive cold atmosphere and restrained emotional expressions will create excellent chemistry with Goo Seung Hyuk, a character who rarely reveals his true feelings."
They added, "Please look forward to Lee Jin Wook's portrayal of Goo Seung Hyuk, as he delicately expresses the subtle emotions hidden behind the character's expressionless face and brings his own interpretation to the role."
The Korean remake is based on the 2018 Japanese drama Unnatural, which starred Satomi Ishihara as Mikoto Misumi and Arata Iura as Kei Nakado.
The original series gained a strong following in Japan and South Korea for its mystery storytelling, meaningful social themes, and performances. News of a Korean adaptation has attracted attention from viewers familiar with the original.
With YoonA and Lee Jin Wook now confirmed as forensic pathologists, anticipation is growing over how the two actors will bring their characters to life in the Korean version.
tvN's Unnatural is expected to premiere sometime in 2027, with an exact broadcast date yet to be announced.
