G-Dragon is drawing attention in China after appearing in a large-scale outdoor advertising campaign across major cities, a rare move for a Korean celebrity in the country in recent years.
Large posters featuring G-Dragon have appeared at McDonald’s locations in Beijing and other busy urban areas as part of his collaboration with the fast-food brand.
The campaign promotes limited-edition products and menu items connected to the singer, with reports saying customers have also been taking photos in front of the advertisements and visiting stores for the collaboration.
What makes the campaign notable is its reported nationwide scale.
A representative from the South Korean Embassy in China said they understood this to be the first time since actress Jun Ji Hyun that a Korean celebrity had been featured in advertising on this level across China.
The official explained, *“There have been cases where advertisements featuring Korean celebrities were carried out in limited areas, but it is meaningful that this campaign is being conducted nationwide. We see it as a positive sign.”*
South Korean entertainment activities in China have faced significant restrictions since tensions surrounding the deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in 2016. While China never formally announced a blanket ban on Korean cultural content, Korean music, dramas, films, and celebrity activities have faced limited access in the market for years.
Because of that background, G-Dragon’s nationwide advertising campaign is being closely watched as a possible sign of changing conditions for Korean entertainment figures in China.
However, there has been no official announcement confirming a broader policy change or the full lifting of restrictions on Korean cultural content.
For now, G-Dragon’s prominent appearance across major Chinese cities stands out as one of the largest recent advertising campaigns involving a Korean celebrity in the country.
