Sunmi has opened up about an unexpected concern she faces after spending nearly two decades in the entertainment industry.
The singer will appear as a special MC on the July 19 broadcast of KBS2’s “Boss in the Mirror,” where she discusses how her relationships with younger artists have changed over the years.
Sunmi explained that she rarely leaves her waiting room because she worries junior singers may feel nervous or uncomfortable around her.
“I do not usually go outside the waiting room because I worry that junior artists may feel uncomfortable,” she said.
Now in her 20th year since debut, Sunmi has become one of the most experienced active female soloists in K-pop.
She shared that she sometimes avoids meeting younger artists backstage because she does not want her senior status to create pressure.
After hearing her explanation, Lee Kyung Kyu recalled the shared waiting rooms used by entertainers in the past.
“Back then, 20 or 30 people used one waiting room together,” he said before joking, “I told everyone to leave and used it by myself.”
Sunmi will also promote her new song “Forever July” by taking part in a dance challenge with Jun Hyun Moo and Jung Ho Young.
During the episode, she also reunites with fashion designer Go Tae Yong after 12 years. Sunmi remembered that he had a strong and serious presence when they first met.
“He had such powerful charisma,” she said. “The atmosphere was so sensitive that people barely spoke around him.”
Go Tae Yong admitted that he had been extremely confident at the time, adding that people jokingly gave him the nickname “Roof Tile” because of the way he carried his shoulders.
