BIGBANG’s Taeyang revealed the funny story behind how he became a vocalist instead of a rapper.
On May 14, Taeyang appeared on Epik High’s YouTube channel in a video titled “How to tease Taeyang.”
During the casual conversation, Tablo brought up Taeyang’s early trainee days and said, “Young Bae, you were originally a rapper.”
Taeyang agreed and shared that he really loved rap at the time. He said, “I loved rap so much that I wanted to become a rapper. Originally, Ji Yong and I were supposed to debut as a rap duo.”
However, the plan changed when YG Entertainment began preparing a boy group. Taeyang explained that T.O.P later came to YG through an introduction. Since T.O.P had prepared as a rapper, Taeyang thought he would be asked to rap during his audition.
Instead, Yang Hyun Suk noticed T.O.P’s looks first. Taeyang recalled, “After seeing his face, Hyun Suk hyung said, ‘Hey, you are handsome. Try singing once.’”

Taeyang then joked that Yang Hyun Suk needed someone who could sing. Tablo laughed and responded, “I do not know what kind of logic that is.”
Taeyang said T.O.P still tried to sing, even though he had prepared rap. He continued, “But of course, it did not go well. Without realizing it, I sang along beside him.”
After hearing Taeyang’s voice, the company told him to start practicing singing. Taeyang explained that this was how he unexpectedly moved from rap to vocals, leading to his path as BIGBANG’s main vocalist.
