Shin Se Kyung’s Best Supporting Actress win at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards has become a topic of debate online, not only because of the award result but also because of comments made during the ceremony.
At the awards show held on May 8, Shin Se Kyung won Best Supporting Actress in the film category for her role in “Humint”.
She won against other nominees including Shin Hyun Been of “The Ugly”, Yum Hye Ran of “No Other Choice,” Jang Hye Jin of “The World of Love,” and Jeon Mi Do of “The King's Warden”.
After the result was announced, some online users questioned the win. They pointed out that “Humint” was not a major box office hit and said they were not sure if Shin Se Kyung’s performance stood out more than the other nominees.
However, the bigger discussion continued after Yum Hye Ran was mentioned several times during the ceremony.
Lee Sung Min, who won Best Supporting Actor, brought up Yum Hye Ran in his speech and said, “I do not know how nervous I was because Yum Hye Ran was nominated. I even cursed inside because Hye Ran did not win.” The remark drew laughter at the event.
Yum Hye Ran later returned to the stage as a presenter and joked, “I am Yum Hye Ran, who just lost.”
Park Chan Wook also mentioned the situation while accepting Best Film for “No Other Choice.” He said, “I want to thank the judges. Looking at the results, I am sure that the judging was truly fair.”
He then added, “Yum Hye Ran may not agree, but please understand. Shin Se Kyung also did well.”
Online reactions were divided. Some people felt the comments were uncomfortable because Shin Se Kyung had just won the award, while others said the remarks seemed like jokes or an attempt to ease the mood.
Some netizens commented, “Do actors or directors really need to mention it publicly like that?” and “Shin Se Kyung must have felt embarrassed.” Others defended the moment, saying, “It seems like people cannot take a joke as a joke,” and “Park Chan Wook’s comment seemed like he was just trying to smooth things over.”
The debate has now shifted from Shin Se Kyung’s award itself to whether it was appropriate to repeatedly bring up another nominee’s loss during a public awards ceremony.
