A man who spread false and malicious rumors about singer and actress IU has been sentenced to prison with a suspended sentence, but the prosecution is pushing back with an appeal.
According to reports on October 10, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced a man, known as A, to 10 months in prison with a 2-year suspension for spreading false claims and sending threatening messages.
Between May and July 2024, the man posted 29 false articles on his blog, including shocking claims such as calling IU a “Chinese spy.” After IU’s agency took legal action, he reportedly sent threatening emails to company employees multiple times.
The court found that the man had continued to post false content and make threats, noting that he also had a previous record for similar crimes. The judge said, “The nature of the crime is serious, and he has not been forgiven by the victim.”
However, the court considered that he had been diagnosed with a mental illness since high school and has been receiving treatment.
Despite the ruling, the prosecution has appealed, arguing that the sentence was too light given the severity of the crime.
