Singer Kim Jae Joong surprised everyone by saying he wants five kids after being called the first idol grandpa on KBS 2TV’s variety show New Release Fun-Staurant, which aired on the 11th.
On this special episode, Kim Jae Joong, the youngest of nine siblings, showed off his heartwarming and hilarious summer day with his big family. At his parents’ house, he created a full-course day of fun—setting up a huge outdoor pool, cooking trendy snacks, and even bringing out wads of cash for games.
The family’s backyard quickly turned into “Jae Joong Land,” a mini water park for his nieces and nephews. Out of his 13 nieces and nephews, five showed up this year—and Jae Joong played with them like a big kid himself, even turning into a human ride in the pool.

But that wasn’t all. Kim Jae Joong personally made popular treats like tanghulu (candied fruits) and potato cheese hot dogs that have gone viral on social media. His young family members couldn’t get enough, and he happily kept cooking with a smile on his face. For the adults, he made a special version of steamed potatoes that tasted just like the ones sold at highway rest stops.
One sweet moment came when a little niece gave him a crumpled bill as a “tip” for his snack-making efforts. It made everyone laugh and melted hearts.
Later on, Kim Jae Joong’s older sister said something that turned heads:
“You’re a grandpa now.”
One of their nieces is expecting a baby, technically making Jae Joong a grand-uncle. Still, his family teased him, and the nickname “idol grandpa” was born.
When asked about his own plans for kids, Kim Jae Joong looked at the five kids splashing around and dropped a bombshell:
“Five sounds just right.”
His parents didn’t let that comment slide. His dad laughed and said, “At your age…” while his mom added, “Get married before you talk like that,” sending the whole family into laughter.
He also planned a hilarious “pocket money game” using real cash—₩1,000 to ₩50,000 bills. It started as a joke, but his parents took it super seriously, turning it into a game show-style competition. His dad ended up winning and generously shared the cash with everyone, including the grandkids.
To wrap up the perfect summer day, Kim Jae Joong showed off his cooking skills with some refreshing dishes. He made fire jjambbong pork ribs, a spicy dish that tasted like Korean seafood noodles but in meat form. Even star chef Lee Yeon Bok was impressed, calling him a “genius.”
He also shared his quick recipe for chadol mulhoe—a cold soup made with beef brisket instead of raw fish. It only took five minutes to make and looked perfect for a hot summer day.
With pool fun, delicious food, family games, and unexpected jokes about grandkids, Kim Jae Joong gave fans and viewers a summer day to remember—and left everyone wondering if five kids might really be in his future.
