A woman in her 40s who already got in trouble for writing hate comments about IU is facing legal punishment again — this time with another fine for posting insulting remarks.
On June 5, reports from the legal world revealed that Judge Lim Jeong Bin of the Seoul Central District Court ordered a woman named Kim to pay a 3 million KRW fine for insulting the singer-actress IU.
Kim landed in court after she wrote a sexually suggestive comment in February last year under a news article about IU’s agency, EDAM Entertainment. One of her comments included, “Did she bribe the judge?”
In court, Kim tried to deny the charges and claimed she didn’t write the comment. Her legal side also argued that there was no specific victim and that the post didn’t hurt IU’s reputation. But the judge wasn’t buying it and rejected all of her claims.
The court also pointed out that Kim denied everything, showed no remorse, and never apologized to IU. On top of that, she had already been punished twice before for similar actions.
Still, the judge said the crime happened before the final ruling on her earlier case in December 2023 and that she didn’t have any convictions beyond fines — which is why they decided on another fine instead of a harsher punishment.
Back in December 2023, Kim was fined 3 million KRW for writing four hateful comments targeting IU’s outfit and singing on April 10, 2022.
At the time, she told the court it was just her “personal opinion” and said she had a “mental illness that affects how she writes.” Even though prosecutors asked for 4 months in prison, the court gave her a fine instead.
IU has been known for not holding back when it comes to hate comments. Since 2013, she and her agency EDAM Entertainment have been actively suing malicious commenters.
Last November, EDAM shared that around 180 people had already been sued, and many more lawsuits are still being filed. They added, “So far, there have been 6 people fined, 3 with conditional suspension and education, and 1 with conditional suspension and probation.”
IU continues to take a strong stance to protect herself and her fans from online hate.
