• Lee Se Young and Na In Woo's 'Motel California' Faces Unfair Competition—Fans Upset Over MBC's Early Promotion of Next Show

MBC is facing backlash for promoting its upcoming drama, Undercover High School, just as Lee Se Young and Na In Woo’s Motel California began airing.

On January 16, MBC released the official poster for Undercover High School, a Friday-Saturday drama set to premiere on February 21.

The story follows a National Intelligence Service agent going undercover as a high school student to locate Emperor Gojong’s lost treasure. This will also be Seo Kang Joon’s first project after his military service.

While fans are excited for the new drama, many are questioning the timing of the promotion. Critics argue that the early campaign is overshadowing Motel California, which only recently started airing.

Motel California tells the story of a woman raised in a rural motel who returns to her hometown after 12 years. She reconnects with her first love, sparking a heartfelt and comedic "first-love renovation romance."

The show stars Lee Se Young, who shines with her signature rom-com charm, and Na In Woo, who undergoes a dramatic transformation, including wearing 120kg of special effects makeup.

Despite its fresh start, with only two episodes aired so far, Motel California is already competing for attention due to the sudden spotlight on Undercover High School.

Industry insiders have voiced concerns about MBC's decision. A broadcasting official stated, “Promotion for the next drama usually begins when the current one is nearing its end. Starting so early risks creating unnecessary competition and sends a message that MBC may lack confidence in Motel California.”

Fans of Motel California expressed frustration online, saying, “It’s disrespectful to the cast and crew who worked hard on this drama. Give them the attention they deserve!”

With the third episode of Motel California set to air on January 17, viewers are hoping MBC will refocus its efforts on supporting the show while it’s still finding its footing.

  • Lee Jun Young says he felt guilty and cried after acting mean to a grandma in 'Brave Citizen'

Lee Jun Young recently opened up about the emotional toll of playing a villain—and how one powerful scene made him break down in tears behind the scenes.

On the May 1st episode of KBS 2TV’s variety show Problem Child in House, Lee Jun Young appeared alongside co-star Jung Eun Ji to promote their new KBS drama Pump Up the Healthy Love.

During the show, Lee Jun Young was asked about the most unforgettable villain he’s played. He chose his role as Han Su Gang in the film Brave Citizen.

He explained, “It was really tough to film. I had to act like I was leading school violence, and there was even a scene where I bullied a grandmother.”

The hosts were surprised, pointing out how kind and gentle he seems in real life. Lee Jun Young shared how he transforms for such roles.

“I try to act as bad as I can, but sometimes the director says, ‘You still look too nice.’ Then I focus even harder and adjust right away.”

He also revealed that filming one particular scene hit him hard emotionally. “My real grandmother was sick at the time,” he said.

“In one scene, there’s a grandma selling gimbap, and I ad-libbed by stubbing a cigarette out on the gimbap. I was really into character, but after filming, I just broke down. So many thoughts came to me and I started crying.”

Fans praised his dedication to acting but also felt moved by how deeply the role affected him. Lee Jun Young’s honesty gave a raw look at how even fictional roles can hit close to home.
