Choi Yena shared a personal story about her childhood illness during the August 3 premiere of SBS’s new dating program My Remaining Love.
While discussing the participants’ experiences with serious illness, Choi Yena revealed that she had been treated for lymphoma when she was young.
She said, “When I was a baby, I was a childhood lymphoma patient. That is why I relate to the participants of My Remaining Love, and watching them brings up many emotions.”
The singer also spoke about the difficulties her family faced while paying for her treatment.
She shared, “My parents went through a lot because of my hospital bills. They went out to sell kimbap.”
My Remaining Love follows eight young adults who have experienced life-threatening illnesses or received difficult medical news as they face life, relationships, and love again.
The program has received mixed reactions because it discusses serious illness and limited life expectancy. Some viewers expressed concern about using these subjects in a dating show, while others supported its attempt to present illness and death as parts of real life.
Before the premiere, Choi Yena explained why she decided to join the program.
She said, “I thought people with similar pain and emotional wounds could comfort and encourage one another by sharing their stories. I felt the same way while watching them.”
She added that viewers with similar experiences may also find comfort through the participants’ stories.
