Sibling duo AKMU has shared the honest reason behind leaving YG Entertainment and starting their own independent label.

During a recent YouTube appearance, Lee Chan Hyuk explained that it was simply “time” for them to move forward.

When asked jokingly if it was a “betrayal”, he responded carefully and later clarified that it was more like a “graduation”, adding that they had even renewed their contract once before and “learned a lot” during their time at YG.

He expressed gratitude toward the company but explained that his musical direction began to change over time.

He said, “As my producing expanded, my own color became clearer”, and added that as he focused more on details, “there came a point where the company’s direction and my musical color separated”.

Lee Chan Hyuk also emphasized that the decision was mutual and positive, sharing that the company supported them by saying “AKMU seems ready to do well on their own”, and stressed that it was “the opposite of betrayal”.

After leaving YG Entertainment in December following 12 years, AKMU established their independent label and recently returned with their 4th full album.
