Netflix’s latest hit series Genie, Make a Wish starring Kim Woo Bin and Suzy has reportedly been leaked in full, becoming the newest victim of illegal streaming.
According to industry reports on October 6, all 13 episodes of Genie, Make a Wish were illegally uploaded and streamed on multiple piracy websites.
The entire series can even be accessed through a simple Google search, sparking concern over massive losses for one of Netflix’s most popular new titles.
This comes shortly after other major releases like “Squid Game 3” and Disney+’s “Tempest” were also leaked online, despite the government’s ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal streaming platforms.
Experts say it’s nearly impossible to fully block these sites since they constantly change their domain names and servers, making enforcement difficult.
The OTT industry estimates the total copyright loss from illegal distribution to be around 5 trillion won (about $3.6 billion USD).
Meanwhile, Genie, Make a Wish continues to gain global popularity. The fantasy romantic comedy, which premiered on October 3, follows Genie (Kim Woo Bin), a lamp spirit who awakens after a thousand years, and Ga Young (Suzy), a human who lacks emotions, as they get caught in a story surrounding three wishes.
The series topped Netflix Korea’s Top 10 chart just one day after release and ranked No. 3 worldwide according to FlixPatrol.
It also hit No. 1 in 10 countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, proving its massive global success despite the ongoing piracy issues.
