Actor Lee Sang Yoon shared his honest thoughts about acting, mixing humor with sincerity.
On August 19, a press conference for the play Waiting for Godot to be Waiting For was held at Yes24 Stage Hall 3 in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
The play, written by American actor and playwright Dave Hanson, is a comedy homage to Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. It tells the story of two understudies stuck in a rundown backstage dressing room as they wait endlessly for their director.
During the press event, actress Kim Ga Young, who plays the role of assistant stage manager Laura, shared that she could relate to her character and that she learned a lot from her fellow cast members.
When she mentioned Lee Sang Yoon’s background as a Seoul National University graduate, Lee Sang Yoon playfully introduced himself by saying, “I graduated from Seoul National University, but I’m an actor,” making everyone laugh.
Opening up about what drew him to the role, Lee Sang Yoon explained, “Thankfully, I first received opportunities in broadcasting and was able to work for a long time, but I always had a thirst for whether I was truly recognized as an actor. That’s why I came to theater. I keep trying to find answers to that, and I’m working hard to be recognized as a true actor.”
He also added a humorous memory from his student days, saying, “Maybe that’s similar to the character Val’s desire to be on stage. Back when I was in Seoul National University, I didn’t have money, so I used to drink soju at friends’ rented rooms. I’ll think about how to apply that memory to this play.”
Meanwhile, Waiting for Godot to be Waiting For will open on September 16 at Yes24 Stage Hall 3.
