Hearts2Hearts members Jiwoo, Ye-on, and Juun have apologized after a performance on a Japanese variety show drew criticism from some international viewers over concerns about racial and cultural sensitivity.

The issue began after Hearts2Hearts appeared on the ABEMA variety program Congratulations! Hearts2Hearts’ Japanese Debut Owarai Dojo, which was released on August 12.

During a segment where the members used props for improvised performances, Jiwoo, Juun, and Ye-on wore Afro style wigs while imitating a Michael Jackson performance.

After clips from the program spread online, some overseas fans criticized the scene, saying the styling and performance could be viewed as making light of Black hairstyles or culture.

On August 14, the three members separately posted apologies on Weverse, acknowledging that they had not fully considered how their actions could be interpreted.

Jiwoo wrote, “When I wore the wig during filming, I did not think deeply enough about what my actions could mean or whether they could hurt someone.”

She continued, “I have been listening to what many people have said and learning from it, and I now understand why my actions were wrong. I am sincerely sorry.”

Jiwoo added that she and the other members would try to think more carefully before acting in the future.

Ye-on also reflected on the response, saying, “Through this situation, I learned a lot by thinking about how my actions can affect other people regardless of my intentions.”

She added, “I will think more deeply about how my actions may be received and act more carefully and responsibly. I sincerely apologize to anyone who was hurt or disappointed because of me.”

Juun similarly said she should have been more thoughtful during filming.

She wrote, “I did not intend to hurt or disrespect anyone, but I understand that my actions may have caused hurt to some people, and I am sincerely sorry.”

She added, “I will learn from this and think and act more carefully in the future.”

The criticism has largely focused on the use of the wigs and the way the performance was presented rather than on any confirmed intent to offend.

The members’ statements also emphasized that they did not mean to disrespect anyone, while acknowledging that intent does not necessarily prevent an action from having a negative impact.

Following the online reaction, Jiwoo, Ye-on, and Juun issued their apologies in both Korean and English and said they would be more mindful going forward.
