Song Kang reveals he lost 11 kg after military discharge for comeback drama ‘Four Hands’ as Lee Jun Young begins his enlistment

Song Kang has shared how much preparation went into his first acting project after completing his military service, revealing that he lost 11 kg while getting ready for the upcoming drama Four Hands.

On the August 25 episode of TEO’s web variety show Salon Drip, Song Kang spoke about choosing Four Hands as his first drama following his discharge.

Host Jang Do Yeon noted that actors often carefully consider their first project after military service and expressed surprise that Song Kang chose a role that required him to wear a school uniform again.

Song Kang explained that the script stayed on his mind even while he was still serving.

“I read ‘Four Hands’ while I was in the military. Even after reading other scripts, I kept thinking about it. I liked both the character and the script. After finishing everything, it was the first script that came back to my mind, so I decided to do it,” he said.

Four Hands follows two talented young pianists, Bio, played by Song Kang, and Jung Yo, played by Lee Jun Young. Song Kang revealed that filming recently wrapped and that Lee Jun Young entered the military shortly afterward.

According to Song Kang, Lee Jun Young later called him and admitted that his first week of military life was difficult.

“Jun Young called me and said it was hard. The first week is difficult. I told him that once he gets through training camp, things will become a little easier. Honestly, I wanted to tease him,” Song Kang joked.

The timing created an unusual connection between the two actors. Song Kang returned from military service to film Four Hands, while Lee Jun Young completed the drama before beginning his own service.

Song Kang said he understood Lee Jun Young’s situation because he experienced something similar after filming My Demon before his own enlistment.

“When I was about to enter the military, someone I knew had just been discharged. I was so jealous. Because I knew that feeling, I tried not to talk too much about the military around Jun Young,” he explained.

Song Kang also revealed that preparing physically for Four Hands required significant weight changes.

He said his weight reached around 80 kg during his military service, but he later dropped to approximately 69 kg while preparing for the drama.

“During my final leave from the military, I kept going to piano lessons, and I also lost weight. I went up to 80 kg in the military, and now I’m 69 kg,” he shared.

However, Song Kang said he initially lost too much weight and appeared thinner than expected on camera. Because his character goes through different stages of life, he adjusted his weight again depending on the scenes.

“When I saw myself on camera, I looked too thin. For the high school scenes, I went back up to around 73 kg. Then when the character becomes an adult, I lost weight again. There are emotional changes, so I tried to show those changes as much as possible,” he explained.

Song Kang also spent time practicing piano for the role, including rehearsing closely with Lee Jun Young to make their performances look natural on screen.

With Four Hands marking Song Kang’s first project since his military discharge, the actor’s 11 kg weight loss, piano training, and physical changes highlight the preparation he put into his comeback role.
