Seo In Guk has shared his thoughts on continuing to take on romantic comedy roles as he enters a new stage of his acting career.
Following the conclusion of tvN’s See You At Work Tomorrow, Seo In Guk reflected on the drama, his chemistry with co-star Park Ji Hyun, and the kinds of roles he hopes to explore in the future.
Seo In Guk played Kang Si Woo, a highly disciplined and efficiency-focused workplace manager. Speaking about the character, the actor admitted that their personalities are very different.
He said, “Seo In Guk and Kang Si Woo are opposites, especially when it comes to expressing emotions.”
Seo In Guk added with a laugh, “There’s nothing similar between us. I couldn’t live like Kang Si Woo.” He explained that the character follows strict routines and approaches both work and relationships more carefully than he would in real life.
The actor also praised Park Ji Hyun, who played Cha Ji Yoon opposite him.
Seo In Guk said, “She’s a very fun person. It felt like there was no limit to how she could express emotions, and I learned while acting with her.” He added that Park Ji Hyun was open to new ideas, which helped them develop comfortable chemistry on set.
Working on another romantic comedy also reminded Seo In Guk why he has enjoyed the genre for so long.
He explained, “Rom-coms make your heart feel warm. I’ve liked them since I was young.”
According to Seo In Guk, viewers approach romantic comedies differently from heavier genres. He said that while audiences may support a character overcoming difficult challenges in other stories, a romance often makes viewers simply hope that “these two people end up together.”
Seo In Guk also described what he finds appealing about office romance dramas, saying that watching characters become fully focused on their jobs can have its own charm.
He said, “When someone is completely focused on their work, doesn’t that look attractive?” He added that workplace romances can feel especially exciting because the characters must balance their feelings with their professional environment.
Seo In Guk has recently appeared in several office-related projects, including Monthly Boyfriend and See You At Work Tomorrow, while his upcoming drama The Employee Who Sees Destiny will once again feature a workplace setting.
However, he stressed that this was not intentional.
He explained, “I didn’t deliberately choose office dramas one after another. They were simply interesting, and it happened this way.”
He also noted that his next character will be very different. In The Employee Who Sees Destiny, Seo In Guk will play someone with a supernatural ability who begins at the bottom as an intern and gradually works his way upward.
Now entering his 40s, Seo In Guk said that years of experience have also changed how quickly he can adjust while filming.
He shared, “When a director asks for a certain emotional expression, I can respond much faster now.” Seo In Guk explained that scenes requiring sudden emotional changes once took more preparation, while experience has given him greater flexibility on set.
Despite reaching the milestone, the 1987-born actor admitted that turning 40 still does not feel completely real to him.
He recalled co-star Krystal recently asking whether he actually feels his age. Seo In Guk said, “When I talk with my friends, it still feels like we’re friends from high school or like we’re in our 20s. Even though I’m 40, it hasn’t really sunk in yet.”
As for whether fans can expect more romantic comedies from him, Seo In Guk made it clear that he has no plans to leave the genre behind.
He said, “I’ll take care of myself as much as possible so viewers can continue supporting the stories and the characters meeting each other.”
Seo In Guk added that his romance roles have naturally changed as he has grown older, with each project reflecting a different stage of life.
He concluded, “I think I’ve naturally been meeting romantic comedies that suit my age.”
