Kang Ha Kyung is already drawing attention for his strong character acting in the new TVING original drama 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier'.
The drama aired its first two episodes on May 11 and 12. In the series, Kang Ha Kyung plays Corporal Kim Kwan Cheol, the powerful leader of the second barracks at Gangrim Outpost. From the beginning, he left a strong impression with his sharp lines, natural comedy, and bold presence.
'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier' is a military cooking fantasy drama about Kang Sung Jae, played by Park Ji Hoon, a private who puts down a gun and picks up a kitchen knife as he grows into a legendary cook soldier.
In the first episode, Kim Kwan Cheol brought laughter with his constant bickering chemistry with Sergeant Yoon Dong Hyun, played by Lee Hong Nae. When he saw the messy braised potatoes during meal service, he bluntly said, "Is this potato, or was it once potato? To anyone else, it just looks chewed up and spit out."
When new soldier Kang Sung Jae appeared, Kim Kwan Cheol also tried to dominate the mood by asking, "Did you come here without knowing military life is tough?" showing his strong presence as a real power figure at the outpost.
Kang Ha Kyung made Kim Kwan Cheol both annoying and lovable with his relaxed comic acting. He criticized Yoon Dong Hyun's cooking by saying, "This is not a birthday meal. Isn't it a fatal injury if you eat it?" but still made viewers laugh with his unique everyday acting style.
He also showed his full comedy skills in an imagination scene where he eats stir fried sausage and gets hit by a sausage bomb, desperately crying for help.
Later, Kim Kwan Cheol teased Yoon Dong Hyun after hearing that Company Commander Hwang Seok Ho, played by Lee Sang Yi, was taking Kang Sung Jae to the TOD post. He also threatened the soldiers after seeing them enjoy bean sprout soup more than usual, saying, "I hate it the most when people joke around with food".
However, after tasting the soup himself, he suddenly changed and started eating nonstop, even taking someone else's tray. Kang Ha Kyung added even more charm to the character with his funny expressions and detailed movements.
Through Kim Kwan Cheol, Kang Ha Kyung is adding energy to the drama with acting that switches smoothly between sharp and silly. His strong appearance from the first episodes is raising interest in what kind of performance he will show next.
Kang Ha Kyung is also active on stage. He appears as Smerdyakov in the musical 'The Brothers Karamazov,' which opened on May 12. The musical will run until September 6 at NOL Theater Daehakro Woori Investment & Securities Hall.
Meanwhile, TVING original drama 'The Legend of Kitchen Soldier', starring Kang Ha Kyung, airs every Monday and Tuesday at 8:50 PM on TVING and tvN.
